An unconventional museum occupied the lower two stories of this building, originally designed as a shopping mall. The prominent dome projects a civic air, although the museum's ownership (see preceding entry) is very much private enterprise. Bantel and Appelbaum squeezed a spectacular multimedia display inside with a “video news wall” and, in a 36foot-high lobby, a geodesic globe festooned with the mastheads of more than 1,800 newspapers.

At the end of 2001 the Freedom Forum announced that it would close the Newseum in March 2002 in preparation for a move to a new site and a much larger, purpose-built facility on Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Washington, D.C. As of this writing, the Rosslyn site awaits yet another reuse.
