Built as the Lone Star Brewery, the brick building was admirably refitted to its new role as an art museum. The exterior was carefully modified in the conversion, with some of the original window openings sealed with shutters. Interior spaces were simplified to create large gallery spaces, all painted white. The inserted elevators, glass cubes trimmed in stainless steel, give a dramatic glimpse of each floor's contents as they rise through the atrium. Translucent glass walls with gridded patterns like Japanese paper screens grace the exterior of the recent addition, contrasting with the crenellated, fortress-like appearance of the original structure.
