Because Houston-based Taft Architects— John J. Casbarian, Danny Samuels, and Robert Timme—had designed a public school outside Columbus, Indiana, under the auspices of the Cummins Engine Foundation, they were able to secure a commission from the Houston Independent School District for this school in an established, near-town neighborhood. Taft spatially translated a diagram of programmatic distribution into a combination of distinctive shapes that internally cluster related uses and externally communicate the complexity of the program.
