This one-story L-shaped library has always served the surrounding African American community. Domestic in scale and appearance, the red brick building has a steep slate roof with flared eaves and its central entrance is marked by a steep gable at the roofline. On each side of the entrance is a bow window flanked by heavily mullioned windows. The interior is dominated by a large reading room with adjoining spaces for an office and a reference room, and a lecture room is in a rear ell.
