Serving many of the travelers passing through the bustling port town, especially riverboatmen, this weatherboarded inn with exterior-end stone and brick chimneys and a rear ell stands at the corner of the main road to Harrisonburg. Its irregular four-bay plan, two front doors, and long facade suggest its use as an inn but may simply reflect its construction in two phases. Today the house is a museum documenting the town's history.
