Mid-19th century. South side of Roosevelt Blvd. at the center of town

Built by Joseph Ruffner, this five-bay Greek Revival brick mansion has an expansive doorway framed by side lights and transom. The Mount Vernon–style portico, side wings, and dormers are twentieth-century alterations that attempt to give the ensemble a Federal appearance. This plantation manor was the centerpiece of the property on which the WPA homestead project was built and the house for which it was once named. It served as the first administration building.
