Union's name belies its Civil War sentiments. On axis with Main Street at the northern edge of town, this marble statue of a Confederate soldier standing tall on a granite pedestal above a rough stone foundation looks resolutely southward. As a work of art the statue is unexceptional, but the extraordinary setting remains little changed from the time the monument was dedicated 100 years ago. The soldier stands in a cow pasture, protected by a rail fence, reached from the street by a fenced pathway. His lookout post gives a fine sense of Union's setting within a valley surrounded by low hills.
