As the home of coal company officials, Mount Hope has a number of early-twentieth-century houses more ample in scale and design than might be expected for a small town. The L. C. Patteson House (1914), 831 Main Street, a hipped-roof brick foursquare house with a front porch extending to form a porte-cochere on the side, was once the home of Okey L. Patteson, governor of West Virginia from 1949–1952. At 515 Main Street, P. M. Snyder built a large red brick foursquare with a broad dormer on each slope of its hipped roof. He illustrated it in a 1911 advertisement for his construction company, in which he claimed “modern residences our specialty.”
