Until it was dismantled in 1969, this rambling log house stood for many years, weatherboarded and painted white, at 1538 Kanawha Boulevard, East. Built on the Ruffner farm, it had apparently served in some capacity related to the family's sawmill operations but was converted to a house by Joel Ruffner around 1827, the year of his marriage. In 1970 it was rebuilt at its present location through the efforts of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in West Virginia. Although much remains to be learned about its early history, its carefully crafted walls of huge virgin timbers are an eloquent reminder of pioneer days and provide a striking contrast with the refined proportions and details of the Craik-Patton House, now its next-door neighbor.
