When the plantation's house burned in the early twentieth century, the weatherboarded kitchen with its central stone chimney became the principal residence. To enlarge it, a frame addition was set at a right angle to the former kitchen and connected by a breeze-way. At the rear of this dwelling is a remarkable stone smokehouse with a high-pitched gable roof. Here the stones are of an unheard-of size for an outbuilding and have an extraordinary range of color.
