Originally designed by Milwaukee architect Messmer, the Koenig House vividly reflects changing architectural fashion in the late nineteenth century. The house once stood about fifty feet to the northeast, facing W. Lisbon Avenue. In 1897, when redevelopment meant that N. 32nd Street bisected that site, Koenig moved the house to its present location. A nineteenth-century photograph reveals that the structure started out as a High Victorian Gothic style frame building, probably constructed around 1883. When the house was moved, Andree’s extensive remodeling converted the facade details and exterior ornament to Colonial Revival. Note especially the full-facade porch with Ionic columns and a curved pediment, the pedimented gable with swags beneath it, and the corner swag-draped tower.
