This plain, brick house was part of George Hairston II and Louisa Hardyman Hairston's one-thousand-acre tobacco plantation. Hairston was also the owner of the Union Furnace Iron Works, now part of Fairy Stone State Park (PT9) in Patrick County. A longtime member of the Virginia House of Delegates, Hairston later became a state senator. The house is built of brick made on the plantation by the Hairstons' slaves. The two-story, three-bay house has flanking one-story wings and a one-story central portico. The house, transitional between Federal and Greek Revival, an amalgam typical for the area, has a fanlight over the entrance as well as sidelights. The door and window sills are of soapstone and the pedestals of the Doric porch columns and crawl space ventilator grilles are of iron from Hairston's Union Furnace.
