The showiest among the status houses that reshaped the east side of Main Street overlooking Rutland's green at the end of the nineteenth century was this one for banker and department store owner George Chaffee. The two-and-a-half-story Queen Anne house rises from a terrace and first floor of rusticated gray marble with wood-shingled upper floors and a high slated hipped roof. Its massing is enlivened by a great Syrian arch over the recessed entrance, a porte-cochere, gambrel dormer, and contrasting three-story towers at its front corners. The tower to the north is polygonal with pointed-arched windows at its second level, and the tower to the south is round with a tall, chateau-like, flared conical roof, and finial. Leaded glass, bracketed jetties and eaves, and patterns of shaped shingles further enrich the mix. Currently used as an art gallery, Chaffee's showplace survives largely intact, conveying the lavishness of prosperous late-nineteenth-century Rutland.
