Although the Union Tanning Company is now an industrial archaeological site, many of the tannery's single-family, workers' houses survive. As in numerous company towns, these are small wooden buildings on foundations of local stone. Their compact two-story floor plans provide two rooms on each level and a shed-roof porch across the front. The company provided these basic, affordable houses to attract and retain a skilled workforce.
