This oldest extant collegiate building in Vermont was erected as a dormitory organized around three entrances. A descendant of Yale's Connecticut Hall (itself a reflection of dormitory organization at Oxford and Cambridge), it is stylistically closer to the mill buildings then rising in Middlebury. Painter Hall was built of donated materials, mostly Weybridge limestone, but faced with scrap marble on the first floor, including a fragment of an unused grave marker as a lintel above one cellar window.
