For nearly three hundred years this site on Bissell's Cove was used for manufacturing purposes. The present clapboard mill, hunkered down by the cove at the bottom of a bank, and village complex typify the small scale of southern Rhode Island's textile communities. The dramatic double clerestory topping the main building may be unique for Rhode Island; it is certainly the only extant example. A mill with single clerestory and an office were later added to the southern end. Across the road lies the mansard-towered brick weaving shed with brick pilasters extending right up into the gable. Following the closing of the mill in 1979, the entire complex was converted to housing, with greater sensitivity to the exterior of the building and its beautiful setting than is the case with many such conversions.
