1902. 75 Mill St.

The front of the mill shows a handsome two-story door and window organization, the brick wall above extended by a quite elegant stepped screen to conceal the long gable roof behind. This stepping, in conjunction with the forceful arrangement of the openings, dignifies a commonplace vernacular building by simple means. The builder-architect J. D. Johnston was one of the largest employers in Newport at the turn of the century; more than a hundred carpenters and millwrights worked for him on many of the largest residences of that era. The mill was enlarged and renovated in the 1980s for use as an inn.
