Designed by a large architecture-engineering firm, this is a conspicuous and early example of a group of schools built in the state after World War II which brought the modernist factory aesthetic to the classroom, especially in the use of opaque glass brick walling over narrow bands of “view windows” as a means of obtaining ideal light for classrooms. The brick-clad reinforced concrete clock tower exemplifies the concern for according monumentality even to local public works which was more characteristic of prewar than postwar America.
