The much-altered but now partially restored English Georgian-styled former Ritz-Carlton Hotel was built across Broad Street from the Bellevue-Stratford (
PH56) in 1913 and enlarged again by Trumbauer in association with New York architects Warren and Wetmore in 1923. Constructed by the Widener family to provide a place for their children's social events, it marked the profound social divisions of the early-twentieth-century city. The great colonnade of the piano nobile and the overhanging cornice were removed in a 1950s renovation by Ralph Bencker. The base was restored in 2002 based on the surviving elements in the tiny rear alley as part of its adaptation as housing for the University of the Arts (
PH60).
