Carpathian immigrants to the Northern Anthracite Field brought their traditions about church architecture with them and, as a result, the mid-valley boasts several superb examples of churches designed to replicate, to one degree or another, the Lemk churches of what is now western Ukraine. At St. Michael's, the vernacular tradition of the three-chambered Lemk church, with its structurally distinct narthex, nave, and naos, was translated into three stepped towers. Worthy of comparison are St. John the Baptist (1930, Lester Merritt Davis) in Mayfield (1.6 miles north of Jermyn) and the churches of Sts. Peter and Paul and St. Basil the Great in Simpson, north of Carbondale.
