The church appears to have several phases, the first looking to mid-nineteenth-century German design, then a second phase characterized by Victorian color probably by Durang, and, finally, Colonial Revival bits by Duckworth. Durang was Philadelphia's principal architect of Catholic churches, while Duckworth was from Scranton. The most memorable feature is the single spire that rises needlelike, at the east end of Memorial Park, engaging in architectural dialogue with the heftier tower of the city hall at the park's other end.
