1854, John McArthur Jr. 30 E. Baltimore Pike

Among the earliest surviving landmarks of the new county seat is this splendid church that continues the Greek Revival as a national style; fittingly, its cornerstone was laid on the national holiday July 4, 1854. The facade is made memorable by two principal elements: the massive Doric portico of fluted wood columns screening a stucco and stone front whose details recall the work of McArthur's master, Thomas Ustick Walter, at Andalusia (
BU2); and a superb cylindrical tower surmounted by a gilded dome that is in turn ornamented with a gilded shooting star as a weathervane.
