John Carver was the Philadelphia architect who supervised the construction of St. James the Less (
PH136). Although that building, which connected him with lucrative Episcopal patronage, is recalled by this simple brownstone vessel, its central bell-cote was added in the 1870s by Thomas Cernea. At the end of the century the church was further altered to receive what was described as an “eleventh century interior” by Dr. H. P. Yerkes, an amateur architect and member of the congregation.
