Frederick Scheibler designed this model home sponsored between September 22, 1939, and June 1, 1940, by the Daily Republican, the Monongahela newspaper, as a prototype to solve the shortage of inexpensive housing in Mon Valley, and, not coincidentally, as a promotional scheme to sell newspapers. The design centers around a polygonal stair tower highlighted with overlapping brick corner joints, an oxidized copper pyramidal roof, and a glass block window. The house blends modern smooth walls and minimal decoration with a cottage ambience by using Moravian tiles around the door and window and polychrome slates on the gable roof. When completed it was open to the public for two weeks, and the newspaper devoted sixteen pages to the gala event.
