Rita McGrady, her son, and neighbors have built three of the most distinctive pieces of vernacular architecture in Butler County. Using stones from old barns, and the mechanical aid of only a tractor and a forklift, she designed and they built her home, a round barn, and a smaller house. Inspired by the numerous farms she visited with her father as a child, the McGrady barn is one large circular space with two oversized doors on opposite sides and a roof supported by a central post. A small one-and-one-half-story gable-roofed house was built adjacent to the barn, which is used for storage. Her house on a separate property north of U.S. 422 nestles into a gently sloping hillside, and is constructed of old barn stones and huge recycled barn beams.
