This gabled two-story Prairie Style residence, with a single-story hipped-roof extension, has been altered by covering the original siding material with asbestos shingles. Atkinson was a civil engineer and an engineer for the state at the time he built this house. Other examples of Prairie Style influence, explored more or less successfully by local architects, can be found throughout the district. These include the Henry Steele House (1916, Frederick W. Keith) at 103 W. Avenue B, and the Lloyd Schipfer House (1916, Ashelman and Gage) at 232 W. Avenue B. The innovative Prairie Style seems to have found good acceptance in Bismarck as an early-twentieth-century expression of Progressive Era design values.
