Conical-roofed octagonal and domed round towers, receding porches and a sweeping veranda, and shed-roof dormers project from this large asymmetrical wooden Queen Anne cottage. The house was planned so that whether from inside, or on a balcony of one of the towers, or from one of the porches or bays, the residents could enjoy the magnificent view of the Straits from this high vantage point on the West Bluff. The generous overhang of the bracketed eaves and the porches offer protection against the weather. This picturesque house is covered with a variety of decoratively cut shingles. The swag running along the frieze adds a festive touch. Behind this summer house and others on West Bluff are the necessary carriage houses and stables and paddocks, for no automobiles are allowed on Mackinac Island. Amberg was a German-born Chicago businessman and investor in the Amberg, Wisconsin, granite quarry. The summer house stands on the site of the earlier, smaller William and Sarah Westover Cottage (1886).
