This red brick Richardsonian Romanesque building encompasses one of the city's most imposing blocks. This building originally housed the Clark Jewell-Wells Company, wholesale grocers. Above the red sandstone first story, the windows of the building are paired to the fourth story (and to the fifth, at the corner bay) under heavy round arches, then they diminish to triple groups at the top within the same bay—a scheme first used effectively by H. H. Richardson in his Marshall Field Wholesale Store in Chicago (1885–1887), except that Richardson used four rather than three. Foliated patterns and human faces carved in sandstone ornament the capitals of piers and pilasters.
