On a tiny 1.25-acre site formerly occupied by a motel and a public beach stand the eighteen small, luxury, freestanding condominiums of Bay Street Cottages. They follow the principles of New Urbanism and “smart growth.” The developer, Robert Mossburg and the Cottage Company, located Bay Street Cottages close to downtown to avoid sprawl. They recycled materials from the demolished motel to satisfy green construction methods, planted 450 trees to compensate for new lumber used in construction, and donated a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the condos to the Little Traverse Conservancy to purchase the conservation easement on a family farm north of Harbor Springs. Cottage exteriors are inspired by northern Michigan resort cottages with front porches and dormers; interiors feature everything upscale.
