The historical references made in this church are to the French Romanesque, coupled with an Eastlake spire and such Italianate features as bracketed gables. The walls are of rubble limestone quarried from the site, while the tower and south facade are regularly coursed cut limestone. In various rebuildings and repairs, the tower's spire, which rises 148 feet from the base of the building, has lost its small intermediate dormers and its metal cap, ball, and cross at its pinnacle. Because of its steep hillside location, the church is cut into the hill, and on its south or entrance front a high, terraced stone podium has been provided.
