Parker House

1939, Howard F. Moffitt. 1302 Ginter Ave.

The designer/builder Howard F. Moffitt is best known for his romantically charming medieval houses. In the Parker house he looked to California's Monterey Revival—a style that was popular throughout the country in the 1930s. As with examples of this style in California and elsewhere (in Florida and Louisiana it was referred to as “Caribbean Georgian”), Moffitt has both Colonialized and Modernized the original nineteenth-century California style. Moffitt's fondness for miniaturizing is present even here, for the Parker dwelling is not at all as large as it seems from a distance. This house, like most of those of Moffitt, was built as a spec house, and George F. Parker was the first owner.
