Originally a Protestant missionary church, this building served the inhabitants of the Hawaiian fishing village at Kalaupapa until the early 1880s when a storm blew off the belfry and roof. After standing roofless for a number of years, it was converted into a jail sometime before the turn of the twentieth century. Today it is used for storage and to house Kalau-papa's fire engine. The fourth stone church erected by the missionaries at Kalaupapa, this building owes its longevity to the use of lime mortar rather than the mud mortar of its predecessors. The initial mission was started by Kanakaokai, a graduate of Lahainaluna.
