1911, Father John Couturiaux. 1294 Makawao Ave., Makawao

Now engulfed by parking lots, St. Joseph's presides over a still spacious front lawn with a cypress-lined walkway stepping up from Makawao Avenue. A nicely proportioned reinforced-concrete Academic Gothic Church, its basilican plan, strong corner tower, buttresses, arched stained glass windows, and heavy portico are characteristic of its era. In sufficient funds delayed the construction of the tower until 1927; it was a gift of the Beynes family of Holland, whose son served the church from 1918 to 1934. Father John Couturiaux was sent from Lihue to design and oversee the construction of this church.
