Rags-to-riches shipbuilder William H. Todd gave this $100,000 war memorial, which consists of a granite obelisk and a triumphant bronze Victory figure derived from Augustus Saint-Gaudens's statue of William Tecumseh Sherman, New York City (1903). Nine thousand people gathered for the unveiling. That same year, Lukeman went to Georgia to carry out his most famous work, the giant relief sculptures of Stone Mountain (1925–1928). Todd Memorial, its avenue of cherry trees, and nearby Washington Memorial Bridge together form a City Beautiful ensemble. To the west are memorials to the Vietnam War (1983) and African American soldiers (1998) by local sculptor Charles C. Parks.
