Chapline Street acquired a residential character over the years, being one block east of Market Street, slightly uphill, and removed from the market's hustle and bustle. This closely spaced group of houses, documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1976, was listed on the National Register in 1983 as the Chapline Street Row Historic District. A wonderful concentration of Victorian period architecture, it is Center Wheeling's most complete nineteenth-century residential block.
