This frame house shows the proper diminution of window heights characteristic of the Federal style, from nine-over-six sash on the first floor to six-over-six above. A polygonal side bay, German siding, and a bracketed cornice are later modifications. Joseph Johnson (1785–1877), a member of Congress and Virginia's only governor from the trans-Allegheny area (1851–1856), built the house. It continues in private ownership and is excellently maintained.
