Highland House

Highland House West Virginia Collection within the Carol M. Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division
1903–1905, Holmboe and Lafferty. 240 E. Main St.

One of Quality Hill's quality houses, this huge pile combines Romanesque Revival, Queen Anne, and Tudor Revival elements. First-story walls are of sandstone, which is also used as trim on the buff brick walls above. A massive brownstone porch with Tudor-arched openings and a crenellated parapet protects the entrance, and a three-story tower with a conical roof stands guard over the west corner. Virgil Highland helped organize the Empire National Bank (
HR9) and served as its longtime president.
