Loosely modeled on English town halls of the early eighteenth century, the two-story red brick station sits on a rusticated first floor with a narrow central doorway crowned by a tall transom and flanked by two large double doors for fire engines. On the second story, double windows set in recessed panels and framed by Corinthian pilasters flank a tripartite window. A central bell tower with an open belfry, pediment, and small dome crowns this distinctive building. Originally, firemen slid down brass poles from the dormitory on the second floor to their engines stationed below. Here the walls still bear the lick marks of yesterday's fire horses trying to tease out their mineral content.
