Among the many nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century residences lining S. Main Street is this handsome five-bay frame house built for merchant Poindexter. The detailing of the handsome elliptical fanlight over the entrance, the sidelights, and the modillion cornice testify to the area's flourishing economy in the years before the Civil War. These and other fine details, such as the one-story entrance portico with its two pairs of Ionic columns and the corresponding side porticoes, suggest that although the house is attributed to Poindexter as its architect, it certainly bears the mark of master builder-architect Jacob Holt, who was then living in Prince Edward County and working in the region.
