1954, Carneal and Johnston. 509 E. Broad St.

It is obvious that when the architects who designed the Miller and Rhoads Broad Street facade received the commission for this midtown Woolworth, they would seek a sympathetic if not contextual solution. Shifting stylistic gears dramatically from the department store's Art Deco facade, Carneal and Johnston designed a building of sleek 1950s modernism. The horizontality of three levels of ribbon windows contrasts strongly with the verticality of the large Woolworth sign.
