Originally these two brick structures served as a kitchen and smokehouse for Marengo (renamed Office Hall Plantation; destroyed). The kitchen, which is the larger of the two structures, is one of the few one-room, two-story brick kitchens known to have survived. Most kitchens were of wood and a single story. The construction of the smokehouse roof is unusual. The single cross beam and a king post eliminate the need for tie beams. At a later point, the structures were joined by a wooden connector. Reputedly John Wilkes Booth sought help in a nearby house during his flight south.
