William Wheeler and his wife, Emma, the daughter of G. H. Hauschild, built a two-story house that represents Leffland's transition from a Victorian interpretation of the Colonial Revival to the colossal column-studded version represented by Leffland's own house on E. Convent Avenue (see VI17) . Set on a multi-lot site, this house commands attention. The house faces the side of the Gram-man House, another 1880s version of the Victoria I-house, at 302 E. Goodwin Avenue. Here the infill bay rupturing the symmetry of the street front sprouts a one-story polygonal window bay of its own, spatially energizing the picturesque.
