1984, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. 300 Convent St.

The first of the new wave of high-rises in San Antonio, this twenty-six-story bank and garage was designed by the firm's Houston office. Reducing the apparent mass of polished granite are the stepped back profiles along with deep vertical channels. Its overall size is compatible in scale with earlier downtown high-rises. The relationship between the bank tower and its parking garage is awkward; the garage looks like an afterthought. The main banking hall, a two-story granite-clad space with a simple finish, is particularly effective, without the sort of bombast that is often found in banks of the 1980s.
