1906, attributed to Dwight Book. 140 E. Houston St.

This four-story structure was one of the few commercial buildings of the period that were designed to face the San Antonio River decades before the arrival of the Riverwalk. The round-arched windows framed by pilasters unifying the facades are reminiscent of Richardsonian Romanesque. Dwight Book, the reputed designer, was a civil engineer in the U.S. Army, and nothing is known of his possible training in architecture.
