One of the last of Gordon's celebrated Romanesque Revival central-plan courthouses, this one is unusually austere, with only the polished granite columns of the entrance porches relieving the rock-faced limestone walls. With its slightly tapered tower, the courthouse has a twin, although in brick, in Lee County (
PF19). In the course of choosing an architect, the county commissioners were instructed by Gordon to visit his Gonzales County courthouse (
SF5) and his Bexar County courthouse (
SA44) in order to view his work firsthand, a bold yet successful move on his part. The courthouse was rehabilitated in 2011 by Volz and Associates with funds from the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program.
