
The lane dead-ends in a plain two-and-one-half-story Federal house, for three generations the home of the Potter dynasty, which was, in effect, the leading family in the village. The first occupant of the house, Elisha Reynolds Potter, Sr., descended from one of the first settlers of the village, was a member of Congress intermittently from 1796 to 1815 and an intellectual presence as well as a legal authority in the community.
