Here it is not the little eighteenth-century house itself that counts so much as its mid-nineteenth-century enlargement—vertically, into a tall gable. Reminiscent of a twentieth-century A-frame, the type was then known as a “lightning splitter.” Several other examples of this rare mid-nineteenth-century vernacular type exist in the state (see the Bicknell-Armington House in East Providence [
EP24]).
