1874, George Barton. 300 Broad St.

The courthouse (
PI5) commission brought George Barton a project for the town's principal congregation. Its stepped corbel table along the main gable and the pilasterlike divisions of the main facade show the influence of New York City's St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church of 1854 by James Renwick. The tower with its hints of Second Empire in the bulbous dome contrasts with the Italian Romanesque of the lower levels. It was added a dozen years later to house a town clock.
