The present courthouse was constructed by a Paterson, New Jersey, architect, who shaped an unruly mishmash of Italianate cornices, Second Empire mansard roof, and French windows, crowned by a classical belfry. The new gesture was its Victorian brick and local bluestone polychromy—since hidden by white paint of the Colonial Revival style. The tall windows above the entrance mark the location of the main courtroom. The county administration building (1985) is the work of another provincial office, western Pennsylvania architect L. Robert Kimball.
