Richardsonian Romanesque denoted urban aspirations in many an American town at the end of the nineteenth century. This was an unusually sophisticated example that has now been adapted as a café. Farther west at the river is the so-called Swatara Ferry House, the home of the ferry operator (c. 1790), together with a small frame church that was moved to the site as a historical relic. The town square at Main and Union streets is typical of Pennsylvania's town plans.
